8-30-09 set list

Today was a glorious day of worship, where we combined the best elements of our traditional/classical and modern services.  Musically, we did everything from an ancient plainsong chant, to a re-tuned hymn, to a modern worship song.

----------

Call to Worship

Psalm 47 (Plainsong chant)

  • A Chant with refrain sung from the back of our sanctuary by two cantors (myself and my partner in crime, Douglas).

The Entrance of the Word

  • A ritual from the Scottish Presbyterian tradition, opening worship by reverently walking an open-faced Bible from back to front, symbolizing our need of the mediation of the written and living Word of God.

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty

  • A well-known opening hymn, summoning the people of God to worship, led by our organist Stephanie Price.

Confession of Sin, Assurance of Pardon (spoken, led by Zac)

----------

Your Grace is Enough (Matt Maher)

  • A great song about the sufficiency of God’s grace through Christ (sola gratia!) and His faithful, covenantal love (best line: “Remember Your people, Remember Your children, Remember Your promise, O God”)

In Christ Alone (Keith Getty, Stuart Townend)

  • The well-known modern hymn reciting the merits of Christ’s work.

Welcome, Greeting, Testimony

O Love That Will Not Let Me Go  (George Matheson, Christopher Miner)

  • Bluegrass-style new hymn about resting in the love, grace, and promises of God

----------

Offering, Doxology, Sermon, Baptisms

There is a Fountain Filled with Blood

  • Many don’t make this connection, but this hymn goes great after baptism…its themes are full of baptismal overtones.  Traditional with organ.  Very beautiful.

Benediction, Postlude
